Misool Eco Resort - Batbitim, Raja Ampat, Papua, Indonesia
Misool Eco Resort is owned by its shareholders, a dedicated group of divers, conservationists, and adventurers. Most of our local staff come from Yellu, the village from which we've leased our island. Quite a few are from Fafanlap, another nearby village. The staff members you'll meet working in the restaurant, driving the speed boats, and making up the rooms all helped in the construction of Misool Eco Resort.
Raja Ampat, Indonesia is home to the world's richest reefs and dive sites. Located at the heart of the Coral Triangle, the region sprawls over 4.6 million hectares (17,000 sq miles) and boasts the majority of the world's reef-building corals. In fact, in an area the size of two football fields, scientists discovered more than six times as many coral species as live in the entire Caribbean Sea.
Our private resort island, Batbitim, is fringed with powder-white beaches, protected by stunning clear lagoons and abundant reefs. With just nine guest holiday cottages, Misool Eco Resort is able to offer exclusive luxury diving holidays, surrounded by the world's richest reefs.
Our holiday cottages are built to European standards of comfort and safety, artfully blending indigenous natural materials with meticulous detailing. Every single piece of lumber used to build our small haven as has been milled from salvaged driftwood and free-fallen timbers collected in Raja Ampat and the nearby island of Seram.
Our eight deluxe Water Cottages rise on stilts over the placid North Lagoon. Each of these spacious cottages features a private veranda on which you'll enjoy gentle tropical breezes and glorious equatorial views. With steps leading down from your veranda, the house reef is just a few fin-kicks away. Each holiday cottage is equipped with air conditioning, a comfortable bed, a mini-bar, a massive veranda with a built in hammock, and a Balinese-style en suite bathroom. We'll also be offering several DeLuxe Villas, available in late 2009.
Restaurant :
Our beach-front restaurant is located on the North Beach, looking out over a shallow turquoise lagoon. It's the perfect place to enjoy a sunset drink while watching the black tip reef sharks hunting in the bay.
The menu has been created with the discriminating palate in mind by our internationally-trained chef. We offer exceptionally tasty, nutritious, and whenever possible, organic fare from local sources. Of course, we also offer some international delicacies.
Restaurant
We typically offer a simple pre-dive breakfast buffet of fresh fruit, homemade bread, homemade granola, fruit juice, coffee and tea. The second breakfast offers all this as well as free range eggs, beans, pancakes.
Lunch is served as a buffet as well. A typical menu includes classic Indonesian fried rice with toasted cashew nuts, seared tuna, frittata with shallots, bell peppers, and cheese, and a fresh salad with cucumber, tomato, and pineapple, spiked with caraway seeds and balsamic vinegar. This is of course accompanied by a traditional and fiery Indonesian chili sauce.
Dive Center :
Misool
Eco Resort's Dive Centre is located in the North Bay, built on stilts
over the water. The Dive Centre is spacious and airy, with dedicated
wet and dry areas to suit professional videographers, photographers, and
recreational divers alike. The wet room is 52.5 sq meters and is furnished with plenty of camera tables and work stations. Each cottage is assigned its own kit storage area in the Dive Centre. The kitting up platform is quite roomy, with 75 sq meters. Within the 48 sq meter dry area, you'll find computer stations, comfortable lounge chairs, and a monitor for viewing the day’s images. The sunny veranda is 120 sq meters, perfect for drying out between dives and enjoying the topside views. National Geographic Magazine's September 2007 issue featured "Ultra Marine," a story on Raja Ampat's reefs by famed underwater photographer David Doubilet. |

RAJA AMPAT DIVING AREA
(the most rich place of Biodiverse)
Raja Ampat - Papua, Indonesia
(the most rich place of Biodiverse)
Raja Ampat - Papua, Indonesia
Raja Ampat, Indonesia is home to the world's richest reefs and dive sites. Located at the heart of the Coral Triangle, the region sprawls over 4.6 million hectares (17,000 sq miles) and boasts the majority of the world's reef-building corals. In fact, in an area the size of two football fields, scientists discovered more than six times as many coral species as live in the entire Caribbean Sea.
Raja Ampat has over 700 species of mollusks and 1,397 species of fish. Counted among those is the newly discovered 'walking' epaulette shark, commonly seen on night dives on our house reef.
In 2005, Misool Eco Resort reached an agreement with the local village and secured the rights to 400+ sq km of sea surrounding our dive resort island, Batbitim. Inside this No-Take Zone, all fishing, cyanide fishing, bombing, shark finning, harvesting of turtle eggs and shellfish are prohibited. In October 2010, we created a second concession area to include the islands of Daram, which increases the total No-Take Zone to 1,220 sq km (465 sq mi).
Seven additional Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) were established in 2007 due to the joint efforts of Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy, The Coral Reef Alliance, and the local Indonesian government. Raja Ampat is now a Marine Park, using a tag system for visiting divers, similar to Bunaken.
Thanks to our extremely remote location, we are able to offer the variety and quality of live aboard diving combined with all the comforts of a land-based holiday resort. The diversity of Raja Ampat's underwater topography is simply astounding, abounding in all manner of reef systems. Visibility is generally 25+ meters, with temperatures around 26-28 degrees Celsius (78-82 degrees Fahrenheit). You can expect to dive a wide selection of coral covered walls, reef flats, caves and swim throughs, gentle sea mounts, placid lagoons, and current-raked pinnacles.
We've explored over 60 dive sites within a one-hour boat ride of our dive resort, and there are many more waiting to be explored. We are pleased to offer you 20 world-class dive sites within a 10 minute ride from the resort. Some of the more famous dive sites (all within the 425 sq km Marine Protected Area we established in 2006) include Fiabacet, Boo, Magic Mountain, Yilliet, and Gorgonian Passage.
HOW TO GETTING THERE AND AWAY :
Misool Eco Resort - Misool, Raja Ampat, Papua, Indonesia
Transfer
to and from our island via our private speed boat is included in the
package price on scheduled transfer dates. We depart Sorong at about
13:00, arriving at Misool Eco Resort between 3 and 4 hours later. Our
transfer vessel, Marandan, is a brand new 14 meter fiberglass boat with a
seating capacity of 20 persons. There is additional seating outside.
The cabin features reclining seats, air-conditioning, toilet, shower,
and all safety equipment. Marandan is powered by three 250 horsepower
engines.
The first third of our trip leads us out of Sorong harbour and through a mangrove-lined strait with unbroken swathes of jungle on either side. As we approach the mouth of the strait, you'll see some traditional Papuan villages along the banks.
The sea slowly shifts from brown to green and finally to vibrant blue during the second part of the trip. We'll be crossing open water, and you will likely see massive schools of bonito tuna feeding at the surface. Whale sightings are not unheard of.
The last leg of our journey brings us through the breathtaking scenery particular to southern Raja Ampat and the Misool area. There are myriad tiny karst islets and lagoons. About 45 minutes before we reach our island, we enter our 425 sq km No-Take Zone. We are often joined on the last leg of our journey by large pods of dolphins.
We recommend our guests arrive in Sorong on Express Air flight XN800 from Jakarta, departing 05:00 and arriving 11:50am. Due to our remote location, our speedboat is only able to wait for one flight. If you are booked on a flight other than XN800 and it is delayed or cancelled, we will have to make alternate arrangements to get you to the island, and additional charges may apply. If you wish to arrive on a different flight, we recommend you arrive one day early in Sorong.
One night in Sorong after your stay at Misool Eco Resort will be necessary (unless you are combining your trip with a live-aboard trip). Your hotel night in Sorong after your trip is included in the package price. We'll arrange your room as well as all meals, baggage services, and transfers to Sorong's airport.

FAQ :
Where is Misool Eco Resort ?
-
We are located on our own private island in Southern Raja Ampat, West Papua (formerly Irian Jaya), Indonesia.
How do I get to Misool Eco Resort ?
- We'll collect you in Sorong for a transfer via our private speed boat, scheduled to depart at about 13:00. We recommend all our guests arrive on Express Air flight xn800 from Jakarta, departing 05:00 and arriving Sorong at 11:50. Of course you are welcome to make different arrangements, but our transfer boat can only wait for flight XN800. In the unfortunate event that you are booked on a different flight which is cancelled or delayed past our boat's scheduled departure time, we will have to make alternate arrangments to get you to the island. We will be more than happy to arrange your domestic travel.
How long does it take to reach the island ?
- The speedboat transfer from Sorong to Batbitim, our resort island, is about 4-5 hours, depending upon sea conditions. The first third is a scenic passage between the Papuan mainland and small islands of the Salawati group, fringed by mangroves. The second third of the journey is an open crossing over generally calm seas. During the final leg of the journey, we enter the breathtakingly beautiful island chain to which Batbitim belongs. We'll cruise between sheer karst cliffs and innumerable small islands, often escorted by dolphins. About 30 minutes before we arrive at the resort, we'll cross the border of our 1220 sq km No-Take Zone.
What sort of boat will we travel on ?
- We'll travel on Marandan, a 14 meter boat with air conditioned cabin, 20 seats, toilet, shower, and 3 x 250 HP engines. There are 20 reclining seats inside, as well as a spacious deck outside.
What if I have to spend the night in Sorong before the trip ?
- We can arrange a Sorong Arrival Package for you. We will collect you at the airport, take you to your hotel and check you in. We'll collect you again the following morning and bring you to the dock for departure.
How do I book my internal flights ?
- We will happily book your domestic flight for you, as well as hotel bookings in Manado, Bali, Jakarta, and Sorong.
When can I visit ?

USD 100 notes receive the best exchange rate if dated 2000 or later.
What happens once I arrive in Sorong ?
-
We
will meet you at the Sorong Airport, at the 11:50 arrival of Express

in May and June bring more sharks and pelagics.
