Kalimantan is the largest island in Indonesia and third Largest Island in the world after Greenland and New Guinea. The Word "Kalimantan" derives from ancient "Malay" language which means "River of Diamond". The Northern part of Kalimantan is owned by Malaysia and Brunei. Dayak tribe is the original ethnic of Kalimantan, and there are several sub ethnic of dayak separates around Kalimantan. The one in the East Kalimantan is Kayan - Kenyah Dayak who lives in East Kalimantan along Mendalam River.
THE ISLAND
Welcome to the beautiful tropical islands in the region of Borneo, Derawan is an island with a sea of blue and green color gradations views, softly sand, rows of coconut palms on the coast, with a small forest in the middle of the island which is the habitat of various species of plants and animals and the natural beauty of the enchanting underwater. No wonder if this island could be ranked as a top three world-class dive destination and make this island as an island of dreams for the divers. Derawan Island has to total land surface of 40,000 hectares and is nature reserve with beautiful scenery and beaches.
Derawan
Islands series that ran for more than 100mil along the coastline of
East Kalimantan, is one of the most biologically rich in Indonesia. In
this archipelago of water from the Berau River mixed with water from the
Celebes Sea sea creating a unique landscape with the characteristics of
a broad river delta toward the scattered reef, coral atolls and reef
edge. Derawan Islands there are more than 460 species of coral. It makes
Derawan Islands as a region which has the highest diversity of hard
corals in the world number two after the Raja Ampat Islands in Eastern
Indonesia.
This
study also notes that there is more than 870 species of fish, ranging
from Pygmy seahorses are very small to giant manta rays. Very often
found in a large group of manta rays which amounts to 50 tail looks seen
foraging in the waters Derawan. Various flora and fauna are also found
in this area include: 347 species of reef fish, 222 species of molluscs
(including five types of clams); 27 species of crustaceans, 183 species
of coral; seven species of seagrass, and other biota, such as rare green
turtles (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), dugong
(Dugong dugori), fish belebele / Napoleon (Cheilinus undulatus], shell
clams (Tridacna sp.), and crab (Birgus latrd). Some types of biota that
there are important economic value such as prawn lobsters, grouper, red
fish, kurisi fish, sharks, sea cucumbers.
Several
clusters of coral, such as Moras, latitude, Malalangun, Gasongan,
Baliulin and Masimbung also present in Derawan Islands. Waters around
the reef has underwater ecosystem that is amazing. Beautiful coral
reefs, the diversity of different types of coral reef fish species and
biota, and clean white sandy beaches into charm of this place. A number
of rare animals reefs in eastern Indonesia from snail species found in
some of these coral islands. This area is also famous for its habitat
for green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are rare and the largest in
Indonesia.
Derawan IslandNot only it is possible to dive with turtle on every dive at derawan, turtles are also found coming on land every night to procreate; hatchlings are often encountered just below the cottages and restaurant. My Favourite site, however just on the door step-beneath the pylons of 200 m long jetty. Here I have found some of the most mind-boggling and bizarre critters i have seen in years; luminous multi coloured dumpling squids, pairs of 3 ft (1 meters) crocodile fishes, finger-sized purple sea horses and unidentified species of worms, tunicates and dwarf scorpiofish. The quality of diving around Derawan is indeed what divers dream about I have been back four times and i will be back again, again and again.
Maratua Island
Imagine you are sitting on a ringside seat, the arena an underwater colosseum at 100 feet, beneath you and abyssal plunge beyond the depth of mortal endurance. The arrival of a lone 7 foot great barracuda heralds for the show to begin. A dark cloud emerges from the distance, like an uprising tornado, as it twirls toward you, the dark mass metamorphosizes into silvery screen of barracudas, thousand Eight spotted eagle rays pear from the liquid information whilst heavy bodied gray sharks arrive at an electrifiying velocity to break up a school of big tooth trevalley.
The water boils, your adrenalin reaches a record high as a huge giant black spotted Bull raylooms over you to cross the terrain of golden and red coral trees. Large Dog-tooth tunas and mackerels make up the chorus line to fleeting appearence of hammerheads and mantas, this show is the greatest show on earth beneath the sea, the performance limited to twice daily everyday of the year. I saw this performance thrice, and after having over 8000 sojourns is tropical water, this site is among the very best in my experience. The location was discovered by Mr. Nawawi - he graciously shared this secret domain of deep with us.
Kakaban Island
The Island of Kakaban is an excepfora marine environment. An uplifting in the area during Holocene transgression, about 19000 BC has left 5 sq kilometers of seawater trapped within a 50 meter (165 ft) ridge, turning the area into a landlocke marine lake. The only other know lake of such nature found in Palau, Micronesia, is a desert compared to kakaban.
Some of the strangest species and typical behavios are observed in the lake. Through millenium, they have adapted into an ecosystem that is totally unique to the brackish water environment. The lake is teeming with at least 4 species of stingless jelly fish including one of an upside down species of Cassiopea (possibly Cassiopea Xamachana).
About three species of Halimeda green algae cover the botom, and mangrove roots live side by side with tunicates, sponges, tube worms, bihalves, crustacean, anemones, sea cucumbers, sea snakes and at least five known species of gobies. Unidentified species are in abundance. Dr. Thomas Tomascik from Canada has aptly called ths place a Biological Paradise. The mystery of how lake`s plant and animals are able to survive in this isolated system is a subject that marine scientists and geologist bickers about. Thousand of barracudas, blue fined tunas and big sharks are also found at Kakaban,s Barracuda Point.
