Swim with dolphins, sharks, giant turtles and other colorful coral-reef fishes as our Bunaken diving team guides you over vivid, unspoiled coral gardens, all less than a five-minute boat ride from the resort. It’s all about discovering an underwater-paradise at the Bastianos Diving Resort. We’re on the west coast of Bunaken Island, a short trip from Manado in North Sulawesi.

There are dozens of spectacular dive sites that are homes to all creatures great and small diving : Bunaken National Park, off the Manado Coast, around Bangka islands and in the Lembeh Strait – all locations we can take you to on request. The knowledgeable and experienced Bastianos Bunaken dive team, supervised by local PADI Instructors, will guide you on your Bunaken diving underwater adventure. As licensed PADI operators, the team put premiums on diver safety and respect for the environment. When you’re not diving, there’s plenty of time to relax at our comfortable, friendly resort. You will stay in tidy cottages right on the beachfront or nestled into the hillside under shady trees. And every chalet has a private terrace to take advantage of the island’s stunning orange sunsets.


RESORT

Bastianos Bunaken is a PADI Dive Resort which located on the west part of Bunaken Island (PADI PIRA member R-34063). Accommodation at Bastianos in traditional wooden bungalows, we have 10 Hillside and 10 Beachfront Rooms.The ones on the hillside are under lush tropical vegetation and most have ocean views. Our Beachfront rooms are only a few meters from the ocean and on the longest and finest light sand beach on Bunaken Island. Right out front of our resort is safe for swimming and if you like to do some Snorkeling, the coral reef drop-off is only about 40 meters from the front of Bastianos.

Our side of Bunaken Island is the only side where you can watch Sunsets from your room verandah or from a beach bar. Lush natural surroundings, fresh hygienically prepared meals, a range of icy cold beers and soft drinks at reasonable prices. Another special thing about this side of the island is that when you look out into the ocean, you’ll see the open ocean.

A person who has passed the PADI Scuba diver can be able to continue module 4 and 5 on Open Water Diver Course. Virtually anyone who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn a PADI Scuba Diver certification. At some point in the course, your PADI Instructor will ask you to demonstrate the ability to swim 200 meters without swim aids or 300 meters with mask, fins and snorkel and complete a bit of paperwork, to get you on your way.

Emergency First Response (EFR)

Emergency First Response is an innovative CPR/first aid program. Primary Care (CPR) prepares you to render aid to those with life-threatening emergencies. Secondary Care (first aid) builds upon the lessons of Primary Care and helps you assist those in need when Emergency Medical Services are either delayed or unavailable.

Advanced Open Water Diver

Instructions (2 academic sessions, 5 training dives), weights, tanks & boat, and certification. Looking for the ultimate adventure? You found it! PADI’s Advanced Open Water Diver program fine tunes your dive skills and allows you to explore some of diving’s top adventures. It’s your dive – go for it! The Advanced Open Water Diver program offers you a structured program where you gain additional experience and skills under the direct guidance of a PADI professional.

If you’re 15 or older, and a PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent, then you’re ready for the Advanced Open Water Diver program. Or, if you’re between the ages of 12 and 14, there’s the PADI Junior Advanced Open Water Diver or Junior Advanced Plus program. The junior programs are available if you are a PADI Junior Open Water Diver or equivalent certification. After successfully completing the course, you’ll receive the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

This allows you to participate in more advanced diving activities with a maximum recommended depth limit of 30 meters/100 feet, in addition to the qualifications listed for PADI Open Water Divers.


Rescue Diver

Instruction (6 sections academic session, 1 confined water/beach training dive, 2 days rescue skills evaluation, 2 fun dives, tanks, boat and certification. How do you take a subject like accident prevention and management and turn it into fun? Call it the PADI Rescue Diver program! The PADI Rescue Diver program develops your knowledge and skills so you can effectively perform diver assists and rescues, manage diving accident situations and render first aid.

The program is an important step in expanding your knowledge and experience as a diver. PADI Rescue Diver (or equivalent) certification is also a prerequisite for all PADI leadership programs. To get into the PADI Rescue Diver program, you’ll need to be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and must be at least 15 years old.

The PADI Junior Rescue Diver program is available if you’re between the ages of 12 and 14 and hold a PADI Junior Advanced Open Water Diver or Advanced Plus (or equivalent) rating. You’ll also need to have successfully completed the Emergency First Response Program or a sanctioned program in CPR within the past three years.

The PADI Rescue Diver program covers :

• self-rescue and diver stress
• diving first aid
• emergency management and equipment considerations
• swimming and non swimming assists
• panicked diver response
• underwater problems
• missing diver procedures

The first step to become a PADI Professional Member, and to join the highly respectful Leadership Team in Recreational Scuba Diving Industry as well as qualified assistance instructor. The course fee is not including the PADI Divemaster Application Fee, paid directly to PADI.

THE BUNAKEN ENTRANCE FEE

Wear Your Bunaken Entrance Tag with Pride!

All visitors to the Bunaken National Park (divers and non-divers) are required to pay an entrance fee, in accordance with North Sulawesi Provincial Government Provincial Law Number 9/2002. The entrance fee for foreign visitors is Rp 50,000 per daily ticket (approximately US$6), or Rp 150,000 (approximately US$17) for a waterproof plastic entrance tag valid for the full calendar year.



Bunaken Entrance Tag 2010

Entrance tags and tickets can be purchased direct from all NSWA members, or from ticket counters on Bunaken Island and on Siladen Island. They must be carried at all times that guests’ are within the park boundaries, and tags can easily be affixed to guests’ diving or snorkeling gear or on backpacks. Enforcement of the entrance fee system is conducted via spot checks by park rangers on land and at sea.

The entrance fee system has been adapted from the well-known Bonaire Marine Park system, and the proceeds from the sales of the entrance tags are managed by the Bunaken National Park Management Advisory Board (BNPMAB), a multi-stakeholder board that NSWA is a member of. The system has been very successful in raising over $250,000 for conservation programs in the Bunaken Marine Park since its inception in 2001.

All proceeds from sales of the entrance tags and tickets are managed by the Bunaken National Park Management Advisory Board (BNPMAB), a multistakeholder board established by Governor’s decree No. 233/2000 and consisting of dive operators, environmental organizations, academia, pertinent government officials and villagers from within the park. The BNPMAB will utilize these funds to finance a number of high priority conservation programs in the park, including patrols and enforcement to abolish destructive fishing practices such as blast and cyanide fishing, village improvement programs within the park, collection and disposal of plastic and other wastes entering the park’s waters, marine conservation education of village children and adults, and reef and mangrove rehabilitation.

The Bunaken Entrance Fee – Questions & Answers

Why do I have to pay a fee to enter Bunaken?
Bunaken is a national park, protected since 1991 for its fantastic reefs and mangroves and outstanding biodiversity. As with any park, conservation costs money. In order to obtain conservation financing for the park, the Bunaken Management Advisory Board has adopted a tool used throughout the world for national parks – entrance fees. Note that the entrance fee system is formalized in North Sulawesi Provincial Laws No. 14/2000 and No. 7/2002; violation of these laws is considered a criminal offense.

Where does my money go?
Eighty-percent of the funds collected from the entrance fee system are used specifically for conservation programs in the park, including enforcement, conservation education, trash management, and environmentally-friendly village development. The remaining 20% is split between local, provincial, and national government.

Why do I still see management problems in the park?
The entrance fee system was only begun on 15 March 2001. It will take time to accumulate the funds needed to properly manage the park. Please be patient–we are 100% committed to saving Bunaken National Park and making it even better for the next time you visit. What are the priority programs to be funded by the entrance fee system? Top priorities include strengthening and expanding a joint ranger/villager patrol system to eliminate destructive fishing practices such as blast and cyanide fishing and enforce the park zonation rules (eg, no fishing in designated tourism zones), as well as funding reef-friendly village development programs designed to increase villager support for the park. Other priorities include management of the plastic trash problem, conservation education in the villages, and reef and mangrove rehabilitation.

Why isn’t trash management the top priority?
While plastic trash above and below water is unsightly and a primary complaint of visitors to the park, stopping fishing practices that destroy the reef is a more urgent matter. The trash problem is a complex one that has multiple sources, but for the time being, the focus will be on beach cleanups and island waste management while the bigger problem of Manado city trash is negotiated with the government and international development agencies. Stopping the flow of Manado trash into the park is considered a long-term priority.

Why do I still see people fishing if this is a protected park?
Over 30,000 people in 22 villages live within the park’s boundaries and have been there for at least a century before the park was created. While many of these people are farmers and blue water fishermen, some of them do depend upon the reefs for their survival. The zones of Bunaken National Park include areas reserved specifically for conservation, for tourism, and for village use. These divisions allow all three of these interests to peacefully coexist.

How can I help Bunaken further?
As an honored guest to Bunaken, please respect the rules and especially the reefs of the park. Avoid damaging corals and other marine life by controlling your buoyancy and not standing on the reef. Report any violations you see immediately to your host operation or the park patrols – anchoring on the reef is a primary violation! While on the islands, consider patronizing local food, drink and handicraft vendors–one more person benefiting from tourism is one less person pressuring the reefs. Secondly, consider donating to the park through the dive operators of the North Sulawesi Watersports Association (NSWA) or the BNPMAB. The NSWA has several donation programs, including a scholarship program for local youths in the park. The BNPMAB has overall responsibility for conservation programs in the park and can put any donations to good use.

FAQ

When is the best dive season in Manado ?

We opened all year around. You can dive whole year around on Bunaken and Manado if you are in the good condition of dive boats. All of our boat comes with two engines of 40PK in each boat. Two boats with bigger size have three engines each boat of 40PK in a good and well maintained. Sometimes in the rainy season when we have rain on the mainland but on bunaken Island only has little rain or even sunny. The air temperature in North Sulawesi stays around 29-32C all year-round.

The water temperatures on Bunaken between 27-29C, not too much serious protection is required, so we suggest a 3mm one-piece of long-suit for diving is fine which also can give you a protection against jelly fishes and any stinging hydroids.
We have two seasons for Indonesia :

Dry Season : From April until October. This is the time for sunbathing, but can be also getting some warm rain at anytime of the year. During dry season the wind blows from south-east the sea is calm and even looks flat. If you’re coming to visit the rainforest or go rafting, we actually prefer the rainy season (but again it is year-round) because that is when the forest and highlands are watered and are at their most lush. Visibility is normally 29m and can sometimes get as good as 30m+ on some days.

Wet/Rainy Season : From November to March with cooler winds from north-west which can bring heavier rains and rougher seas. Visibility is about 15-20m but can sometimes drop to 10m for a few days when there is heavy rains.

For land clothing, normally shorts and t-shirts are sufficient for the day (even if it rains, because it’s warm tropical rains), and light trousers at night, perhaps with a long-sleeve shirt. Do not forget sun lotion and sun glasses for the day time. We’ll provide towels in the room, but guests also able to bring their own.

What is your advice on Malaria ?

North Sulawesi in general and Manado especially is tropical and so malaria cannot be discounted but there is no malaria in the region. When you are traveling to our region, we suggest you follow your doctor’s advice regarding malaria tablets. Officially, North Sulawesi is non-malarial, but if the tablets don’t bother you too much it’s always best to bring on the side of caution. On Bunaken Island there’s some mosquitoes (but not to many) and we also recommend that you spray anti-mosquito spray for your arms and legs mostly from afternoon until evening. There is mosquito net in every room at Bastianos.

The odd case of dengue fever has been reported in North Sulawesi, though these tend to be in the villages where rubbish is sometimes not properly cleared and in some part of Bunaken Island that has mangroves. Our side of the island is far from the mangroves area.

There are plenty of chemists and dentists in Manado which can provide drugs. The General Hospital (Prof. Dr. Kandou Hospital) has a good recompression chamber (around 60 minutes boat ride to Manado harbor from Bunaken Island and another 15 minutes drive from the harbor to the hospital. Also there is another recommended private hospital which is Pancaran Kasih hospital at the down town of Manado if you require a doctor. There is no public health service, and everyone has to pay so before you are going to the doctor or hospital, be prepared by taking some Rupiah (IDR) cash with you.

Is it safe travel to North Sulawesi (Manado) ?

There are always many reports of problems and conflicts in Indonesia and this is very frustrating us since Indonesia is a big country with many islands which actually not all the areas in Indonesia have problems and conflicts as always reports in the overseas newspaper and TV channels. For people that has been traveling to our country, they know better what is the conditions and the atmosphere like, especially in North Sulawesi since North Sulawesi is one of the safe province in Indonesia for traveling.

Are there any other activities beside scuba diving ?

On Bunaken it’s mainly for scuba diving. Also you can snorkel, sun-bath, relax, and take a walk to one of the villages. For snorkeling, you can joining our dive boat following the diving schedules or you can have your own small out-trigger wooden boat (max. 3-4 pax) by hire from the local fishermans or villagers.

You can going out for snorkeling to Siladen Island and or Manado Tua Island and if you are lucky, on they way you can find a school of dolphins or pilot whales. The island of Bunaken and Manado Tua are still pretty natural. We can arrange trips to the other attractions in North Sulawesi for you, like the volcanic highlands or the Tangkoko Nature Reserve.
