Day 1 | ARRIVAL – MEDAN Upon arrival at Polonia airport you will be met by your local guide and transferred to the hotel. You will have some time to freshen up, before joining the group for a trip briefing. We will then enjoy a delicious welcome dinner, introducing you to Indonesian cuisine and the Orangutan Adventure Trekking team. Meals : Dinner Accomodation : Hotel in Medan |
Day 2 | MEDAN – BUKIT LAWANG After breakfast we will drive 3.5 hours to Bukit Lawang. On the way we will have the opportunity to stop at several rubber and palm oil plantations to witness first hand the impact these plantations have on the natural landscapes. We will also visit a traditional Sumatran village at Kuala before arriving at Bukit Lawang and checking into our hotel. After a short rest at the hotel, we will walk to the bank of the river and then cross the river by traditional canoe. On the other side of the river we will take a short walk through the jungle, arriving at the Bukit Lawang Orangutan Viewing Centre in time for their afternoon feeding time. Here we will see the local Rangers call the Orangutan down from the trees and feed them with fruit and milk. After spending several hours here watching these beautiful creatures, we will return to the hotel. Meals : Breakfast Accomodation : Lodge in Bukit Lawang |
Day 3 | BUKIT LAWANG – LANDAK RIVER After an early breakfast we prepare for our jungle expedition from Bukit Lawang to Tangkahan. We begin the trek with another visit to the Orangutan Viewing Centre during their morning feeding time. We then start trekking deeper into the jungle accompanied by local guide. During the trek there is the possibility to see an incredible variety of local flora and fauna including several varieties of birds, monkeys, wild pigs, and wild orchids. Today’s trek will be a challenging 6 hours on undulating terrain in hot and humid conditions. In the evening we will arrive at the Landak River where our guides will prepare the tent for the night and prepare a delicious campfire dinner. In the evening we may hear the sound of the local night animals. Meals : Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner Accomodation : Tent close to the Landak River |
Day 4 | LANDAK RIVER – ARAS PINANG After enjoying breakfast prepared by our local guide, we press on deeper into the jungle, crossing several small rivers. Today is another tough 6 hour trek but will be rewarded with the incredible scenery of the North Sumatran jungle. In the afternoon we arrive at Aras Pinang and set up camp on the bank of the river. Day 5 | ARAS PINANG – KERAPU RIVER After a jungle breakfast prepared by our guide we begin another day of trekking around 6 hours in the direction of Kerapu River. Today’s trek will be challenging as we climb and descend several hills but we may have the opportunity to spot more wild monkeys, birds and if we are lucky, we might see a wild Orangutan. We arrive at Kerapu River and spend the night in a tent or temporary shelter. Meals : Breakfast - Lunch Accomodation : Tent or temporary shelter |
Day 6 | KERAPU RIVER – MUSAM RIVER After breakfast we continue trekking to Musam River on an adventurous route through the heart of the jungle. After approximately 6 hours of tough trekking, we will arrive at our temporary camp built near Musam River. Overnight at temporary camp or tent. Day 7 | MUSAM RIVER – TANGKAHAN Today we begin the final leg of our trek towards Tangkahan. The tracking will start by passing jungle and emerge from the jungle and pass through several plantations and villages, after about two hours walking we will be picked up by jeep (4 wheels drive at Seroja Plantation and then drive to Tangkahan by 4 wheels drive. On arrival at Tangkahan, we will check into our hotel for a much earned shower and rest after completing the trek. In the evening we will have the opportunity to join our local trekking crew for a farewell dinner with special traditional cuisine to thank them for the incredible support offered throughout the trek. Day 8 | EXPLORE TANGKAHAN After spending the past 5 days exploring the incredible natural environment of Sumatra, today we will experience how the Sumatran wildlife and local villagers live side by side. We will have the opportunity to experience an elephant ride along the river and see how valuable these animals are in so many aspects of life in the jungle and around huge river systems. We will then jump in a tube for a tubing trip down the river to see the jungle from an entirely different view. After trekking for so many days it is nice to be pulled along in the gentle currents of the river. After lunch we will have the opportunity to visit a local school and meet the kids. Day 9 | VISIT RAIN FOREST RESCUE REHABILITATION PROJECT After an early start, we will transfer by bus to the Gunung Leseur National Park Rain forest Rehabilitation project. We will spend a few hours here witnessing the rehabilitation program that your fundraising has helped to fund. You will also have the opportunity to plant a tree and personally contribute towards the regeneration of Sumatra’s rain forest, and the Orangutan’s natural habitat. In the afternoon we transfer back to the Orangutan Information Centre in Medan for an information session on the project you have just visited. Being our last night in Sumatra, tonight we will enjoy a celebratory farewell dinner. Meals : Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner Accomodation : Hotel in Medan |
Day 10 | DEPARTURE Today you will have a free morning to spend a few final hours exploring Medan before transferring to Medan International Airport for your afternoon flight home. Meals : Breakfast Accomodation : - |

Climate :
- The climate is tropical, but due to its many highlands, temperatures can be lower than one expects.
- Temperatures are approximately between 22-30 degrees Celsius.
- The rainfall differs from area toarea, but averages 1.000-4.000mm per year.
- The relative humidity is 70-90% in lowlands.
- The year can be divided in two major seasons, dry season from February to August and wet season from September to January.
- However, the difference between seasons is not as big as in other parts of Indonesia.
- The change of season is also normally extra wet.
- The dry season is of course the best time for tracking, to visit nature parks and for the visibility of animals, etc.
