KOMODO



The Komodo National Park lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia. It's identified by WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area, and is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores.

Komodo National Park includes three major islands: Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller islands creating a total surface area (marine and land) of more than 1,800 km². As well as being home to the Komodo Dragon, or Ora, as it is known to Indonesians, the park provides refuge for many other terrestrial species such as wild pigs, Timor deer, water Buffalo, monkeys and horses.

What to see
An opportunity to view the legendary Komodo dragons during your trip should definitely not be missed, but don't forget to give the underwater world a go as well.

Komodo National Park has one of the world's richest marine environments. It consists of over 260 species of reef-building coral, 70 different species of sponges, crustaceans, cartilaginous fishes (including manta ray and sharks), over a 1,000 different species of bony fishes, as well as marine reptiles and marine mammals such as dolphins, whales, and dugongs.

If you return to port at night, you can also see legions of hunting bats flying in the twilight sky. At night on the Flores Sea, you also have a magnificent view of the stars.

Best times to visit
Although Komodo can be visited all year round, the best time to dive is during the dry season (April to November). Water temperatures North of the Park range between 25 and 29°C. Around the central areas, the temperatures range between 24 and 28°C. The temperatures are lowest in the South, ranging from 22 – 28°C. Waters around Komodo are quite clear (10-30m visibility), although closer to the islands conditions are relatively more turbid.

Flight options
There are 3 flights leaving from Denpasar in Bali which will take you to the Labuan Bajo Airport (Flores). The car ride to the pier lasts about 10 minutes. Flights fares range from 650,000 to over 2,000,000 Rupiah depending on when your bookings are made.

KOMODO DIVE SITES



RAJA AMPAT


Located off the northwest tip of Bird's Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea, in the province of West Papua, Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, caves, and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta, Waigeo and the smaller island of Kofiau.

Raja Ampat is a new regency which separated from Sorong Regency in 2004. It encompasses more than 40,000 km² of land and sea, which also contains Cenderawasih Bay, the largest national marine park in Indonesia. It is a part of West Papua, which was formerly known as Irian Jaya. Some of the islands are the northernmost pieces of land in the Australian continent.

What to see
Raja Ampat is all about diversity - not only diversity of species, but also of dive sites. There are some areas where soft corals and sea fans dominate, others with hard corals, seagrass beds, mangroves, shallow reefs, drop offs, caves, black sand and white sand... and there are more species of fish life here anywhere else in the world. Here, all the levels of the food chain are well represented – from pygmy seahorses to top predators. In many places brightly colored soft corals can be found close to the surface which, illuminated by natural sunlight, make these dive sites spectacularly colorful. The reefs in Raja Ampat just buzz with life!

The stunning beauty of Raja Ampat's exotic & enchanting islands will leave your camera full. Take extra memory sticks for the underwater scenery; great visibility, pristine waters, healthy reefs and a dazzling array of marine life promise pretty pictures indeed!

The jewel of Raja Ampat is found further down south. Misool is also a place of great bio-diversity and wonderful cave diving opportunities. Do take time to experience both the north and the south islands of Raja Ampat.

Diving Season
There is no best or worst time for Irian Jaya diving. Conditions remain largely the same throughout the year.

Occasionally the sea might pick up a little at Raja Ampat between the months of July and September but these are only minor swells which should not cause you much inconvenience.

CENDERAWASIH BAY

The large Cenderawasih Bay National Park in the north of the island of Papua, otherwise known as Teluk Cenderawasih, includes Indonesia's largest marine national park, and is one of the best dive-sites in the archipelago.

Comprising land and coastal areas, islands, coral reefs and pristine seas, the Cendrawasih Park covers a total area of 1,453,500 hectares.The Cendrawasih Bay Park combines coral reef ecosystems with mangroves, islands and terrestrial tropical forest ecosystems. Here are colonies of black coral, blue coral and soft coral. The Park is famous for the 209 fish species that make this Park their habitat such as the butterfly fish, damselfish and parrotfish, and, of course the whaleshark. Mollusks found here include the trumpet triton, the great clam and the cone shell.

What to see
Cenderewasih has magnificent vertical drops, picturesque hard coral gardens, sponge life and myriads of fish .This is the playground of one of the world's largest animals: the spotted whaleshark (rhincodon typus). Though elsewhere in the world divers consider themselves lucky enough to meet one or two, here they come in pods and divers can swim among them.

Scientist Dr. Gerald Allen calls the Cendrawasih Bay "The Galapagos of Indonesia's Reefs". Whalesharks are migratory animals, and are known to grow to 18 meters in length or more. Biologists tell us that they are an acient species originating some 60 million years ago, and are usually found in the open sea. They have a lifespan of 70 years. A 7 meter whaleshark can weigh up to 22 tonnes. Unbelievably these huge animals are docile since they live only on plankton, clouds of egg roe and small fish, which in Indonesia are called "ikan teri".

In the village of Kwatisore near the town of Nabire, these giant fish usually gather by the floating platforms, called bagan, where fishermen haul in their catch of small fry. Kwatisore can be reached from Nabire in around three hours by boat.The only accommodation available in this village are simple rooms at the SD Imanuel Primary School in Kwatinsore. Here the local government trains 20 students to become dive guides and to develop facilities in Kwatisore to serve more tourists.

Besides the whaleshark, four species of turtles inhabit these waters. The hawksbill turtle, the common green turtle, the Pacific ridley turtle and the leatherback turtle can be found in Cenderewasih alongside other creatures such as dugongs, coconut crabs, dolphins and sharks.

Diving Season

The best time to dive in Cenderawasih is from October through to April. The weather is usually mild - little wind and rain.

Flight Options
It is easiest to fly through to Manokwari (MKW) via Jakarta (JKT), Makassar (UPG Ujung Pandang), or Singapore (SIN). Here are our recommended routes;

  • Singapore to Ujung Pandang (Makassar) or Jakarta; flights every day with Garuda Air or Ujung Pandang
  • Garuda Air fly direct on way out, but on return can fly via Jakarta or stay 1 extra night in Makassar for direct flight next day.
  • Sriwijaya Air fly via Jakarta, then early flight to Manokwari via Ujung Pandang. On the return will have to stay 1 extra night in Jakarta
  • Jakarta or Ujung Pandang (Makassar) to Manokwari; can book directly with Sriwijaya Air

Precise Includes :
Transfers (i / v) from the hotel / airport - Boat, accommodation in shared double cabin in the Black Manta, all meals, snacks, fruit, coffee, tea, hot chcocolate, towel and bathroom, cabin service, bottle , Belt lead sinkers, Divemasters.

Price Not Includes :
Cheap domestic or international, airport taxes, hotel rates, national park and the port (U.S. $ 90 to pay on the boat), diving insurance (required), Massage (25US $ / hour), soft drinks, alcohol, Cafe type Nespresso (U.S. $ 2), rental of diving equipment, Nitrox (12US $ / tank), Vacation 15L bottle ($ 12 / day).

* Fuel Supplement :
So far Black Manta has never had to collect any fuel supplement, because Indonesia has been keeping fuel prices stable. But if there was a spontaneous rise of the price of the Black Manta reserves the right to charge a fuel supplement of up to U.S. $ 150 per person / cruise.
