Mimpi Resort Menjangan

Mimpi Resort Menjangan - West Bali, Bali, Indonesia

Set on the shore of a lagoon-like bay in the northwestern coast of Bali neighboring the Bali Barat National Park and the famous diving site of Menjangan Island, the resort is built to simulate a Balinese village with 30 terraced patio rooms and 24 walled courtyard villas.

All villas feature their own hot spring tub and six of them have private natural stone dip pool. Its location preserves an ideal setting for diving, snorkeling, canoeing, sea-biking and an easy exploration to discover the flora and fauna of the Bali Barat National Park.

LOCATION

Mimpi Resort Menjangan is located on a lagoon-like inlet of Banyuwedang, a step-away from Bali Barat National Park and a short boat-ride to the famous diving site of menjangan island. The region belongs to Northwest Bali locally called Buleleng which covers most of Bali’s north coast with its capital city Singaraja.

The ride from Bali’s international airport will approximately take 3.5 hours through one of Bali’s most photographed landscape in the highland of Bedugul. Perched approximately 1000 meters above sea level, the region is home to 3 major lakes of Beratan, Buyan and Tamblingan. A unique old temple floats on the lake of Beratan. The region is also known as Bali’s main producer of vegetable, fruit and flower with daily market in the village of Candikuning.

As soon as leaving Bedugul region, above the lake, turn left toward the village of Munduk. Tropical plantation of coffee, clove and vanilla fills most scene along the road. Several fresh Bali coffee stopovers are available along this region.

The ride will later get to a small town of Seririt boasting mixed community of Bali, Madurese and Buggish. Turn left on the town’s first junction and drive toward Pemuteran area for another 45 minutes. The resort is located just 15 minutes further from Pemuteran in the village of Pejarakan. A resort sign is set by the main road on a junction to the famous hotspring of Banyuwedang. Turn and drive right in the junction through a smaller road for approximately 700 meters and shortly you will get to the resort’s entrance.

There are certainly some other optional routes available either through the region of Pupuan or Negara. But the above route is most recommended as it is the shortest and offers so much to see on the way.

  Bay Pool

A perfect spot to observe the changing color of the park monsoon forest from season to season. During the dry from August to October, macaque can be often seen hanging in mangrove branches right in front of the pool.

A breathtaking spot to enjoy luxury bathing in the middle of secluded environment. Another communal spring pool is in the garden of the patio room complex as an alternative to enjoy late bathing before retiring.

GARDEN

Landscape
The main energy is put to serve concern that hotel development in Bali should necessarily avoid using productive wet-land. For generations, agriculture has been an important part of Bali’s life. Chopping rice-fields for hotel development can be viewed as a critical issue. The founder simply choose Bali’s bare land for any mimpi development taking all risk that it is a lot more works to do. But the challenge is, at the same time, an excitement. The core is to set up a garden which melts with the existing beauty of the park nature. With a total of 4.5 hectares, the mimpi ground at menjangan is formed by a layer of limestone covered by a black muddy sediment on top. It cracks during the dry but it gets sticky during the wet and it does not hold water much during the rain. There are only few plants originally grow on the ground including pilang (acasia), pidara, kopi-kopi and intaran.

Kitchen Garden
A plot of approximately 60 acres is set at left corner of the ground below the wantilan as an organic kitchen garden. This plot is chosen as it is closest to water supply. A stream-river-like pond is built to flow in levels from the accommodation compound. This river holds and tanks hot spring waste water from tub in villas and hot pool.

Water plants of different kinds are grown in each blocked pond to provide natural bio-process treatment for the water. From the last pond which sits next to the kitchen garden, the water is pumped out to supply water for several different kinds of vegetables and fruits. These will supply the mimpi kitchen with fresh daily produces including long bean, pumpkin, cucumber, lemon grass, tomato, egg plant, lemon, papaya, sweet potato, ginger. And they keep experimenting to grow other kinds.

OTHER FACILITIES

Meeting

The resort’s Samudera Room located in the upper level of the patio complex is an ideal venue for a small meeting. With high thatched-roof ceiling and cool marble floor, the room is set 75 square meters in size to overlook the resort’s tropical landscape. Depending on the meeting style, the room could accommodate between 30 (U-shape) to 60 (theatre style) participants.

  Library

A collection of books, magazines, in-house movies are provided with an LCD TV. The library is set close to the bay pool so reading and lounging is made convenient.

  Gift Shop

Upon departure, it may happen that you do not have chance to visit Bali’s major shopping spots. Avoiding to shop at airport which could be more budget-demanding, the resort’s shop offers a variety of Bali gifts, shirts and other retails.

SPRING SPA

Inspired by a dream to interpret the water’s healing effects into a well-being therapy center, Mimpi Spring Spa is built to sit adjacent to the spring.

Eco-concept is imposed in its architectural design using local natural materials, re-cycled wooden furniture, natural LED technology lighting, exclusive bamboo linen, re-cycled paper for collateral, bio-fresh and ingredients induced by bio-energy to entire line.

A thermal spring hydro jaccuzzi pool is set at the edge of mangrove lagoon. Herbal spring bath and various traditional spa treatments are developed focusing on a concept that body’s own energy is the natural source for healing and well-being.

Signature treatments include Mimpi Herbal Compress, Mimpi Art Movement, Singing Bowl, Thai Bare Foot Massage and Mimpi Signature Rituals. This unique thermal spa concept is the first of its kind in Bali and is originally initiated by Mimpi’s founder late Wirja Santoso.

The development involves design by respective experts of The Private Spa. A positive collaboration of all has accomplished the dream to build an eco-friendly spa center which offers state-of-the-art equipment fused with ancient traditional therapies and performed by professional therapists.

Water Quality

Partially located on the resort’s ground, the hot springs of Banyuwedang supply the resort with high quality sodium-chloride-calcium-sulphate water, at a basic temperature of 46.4 C. According to a testified spa and mineral water analysis by the German company Hydroisotop, the water is to be classified as “aqua ex fonte thermale oligominerale” with a comparatively low content of solute gases and radioactivity (Radium and Radon). The water is comparable to other well-known thermal spring waters such as Achen, Neuenahr, Pyrmont and Baden-Baden of Germany, Evian and Vichy of France, Bath of UK and other mineral waters like Hirschquelle, Gerolsteiner, Nauheimer and Rosbacher Urquell.

Possible Application

Internal : The water fulfills the standards of the German Regulations on Mineral Waters and may be served for drinking for a specified length of time. Local inhabitants have been drinking this water all their life with good health effects and there are reports on comparatively better dental and dermal health of the people using it.

External : skin contact applications such as prolonged warm showering, cold and warm showering, warm baths, thermal changing baths (Kneipp’s Wechselbad), warm/cold “Kneipp’s Surprise” applications (Guss), and carbon dioxide or oxygen-added sprinkling spa applications. Soap need not be used extensively as a hardness of 6.5 classifies the water as rather “soft”. The slightly acid pH of 6.5 makes the water very friendly to the skin. A shooting effect is reported by persons suffering from chronic skin lesions of inflammations (dermatitis, etc.) due to its natural contents of low level H2S-gas and SO4-ions which are known to render specific dermal effects. As the water is rather alt-depleted, drying of the skin after bathing is not necessary.

Enteral : Enemas and Colonix Therapy are possible and world-wide regarded as safe.

MIMPI DIVE

Owned and managed by mimpi group, the Mimpi Dive Center in Menjangan is operated under affiliation with PADI R-6434. Like any dive operation of Mimpi, it is site-based with expertise to cover all Bali’s northwest sites. Dedicated team, well-maintained equipment and passion to quality is combined to put safety on top. Being located in easy access to all major sites in the area, diving is convenient and rewarding. Staying at the resort gives an advantage of enabling to make early morning dive before all other day-trip divers from the south arrive to crowd.

Daily boat dive arrangement is made to go to the protected Menjangan island. Boat is arranged to depart at 09:00 am after breakfast directly from the resort’s gazebo jetty. It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the island. For two dives, arrival back to the resort is approximately 02:00 pm so an ample of time is still available to enjoy the resort. Diving to Bali’s fame macro sites Secret Bay and Puri Jati is arranged by car. Unlike diving to menjangan island, shallow shore dives applies in both sites. Late afternoon dive or night dive is mostly arranged to Mimpi Channel, a narrow entrance channel connecting the resort’s secluded bay to open water which is reachable by a short 5 minutes boat ride.

The dive center is open from 07:00 am to 08:00 pm. To facilitate arrangement, newly-arrived divers are firmly advised to visit the dive center to make pre-arrangement of the following day trip.

PADI Courses

PADI scuba courses up to rescue level are offered in multi languages. Audio-visual class and pool sessions are fully conducted right in the resort facility. The dive training pool is integrally located close to the dive center and the class. Open water dives are arranged to menjangan island or other nearby sites which are all in easy access from the resort. Pre-booking for courses is well recommended.

DIVE SITES

Menjangan Island

The island is located within the confine of Bali Barat National Park, a protected reserve area that encompasses 780 square kilometers. The names menjangan means “deer”. Because the island is in a protected position, currents and wind-generate waves are rarely a bother. The water can be clear-a snorkeler, distinct, 25 meters above and the rest of the time the visibility seldom drops to less than 15 meters.

The coral walls around Menjangan are vertical down to 30-60 meters, and then slope outward. The reef surface is particularly rugged : caves, grottoes, crevasses and funnel-like splits break up the coral wall, and the surface is textured with little nooks and crannies. Gorgonians of many kinds reach large size here, and huge barrel sponges are abundant. Soft corals blanket the colorful wall all the way down.

The island offers fine diving to suit every taste with 7 recommended sites to explore.
  1. Temple Point : a sandy site in the eastern tip of the island, a good point to see crocodile fish and nudibranchs.
  2. POS II : a rich reef-wall site up to 50 meters deep with huge gorgonian fans, surgeonfish, jaclfish, batfish, angelfish, coral cod, nudibranchs, shrimps, trevally, lionfish, parrotfish, scorpionfish and shark.
  3. Cave Point : several underwater caves with interesting rock structures to explore inside.
  4. POS I : a sandy slope site from 2 down to 30 meters with lots of soft corals and gorgonians, lionfish, shrimp gobies, sea stars, mantis shrimp, small coral cod and royal dottybacks. Some divers have even witnessed whale shark here.
  5. Eel Garden : a shallow sandy bottom area alive with garden eels which has terrific hard corals with large gorgonian fans, huge barrel sponges, coral cod, angelfish, lionfish, scorpionfish, basslets, anemone fish, cuttlefish, trumpet fish, frogfish, mandarin fish, napoleon fish and school of pelagics.
  6. Anker Wreck : believed to have laid there for over century, it is 25 meters long and sits 45 meters deep. Flat rectangular sheets lay in what had been the hold which also contains an assortment of ceramic and glass bottles. The wreck is communalized by soft corals, a good site to see turtle and shark.
  7. Coral Garden : a tees sloping wall leading from 8 down to 4o meters with lots of soft corals, gorgonias and sponges, some large snappers, a few blue-spotted trevally, schools of fusiliers and a black-tip reef shark.

Secret Bay

Approximately 25 minutes drive from mimpi, located on an adjacent bay to ferry harbor of Gilimanuk, the Secret Bay is a unique easy shore dive often considered as a site for new discoveries and best for macro photography. It is 25 C (77 F) on average, a chilly 5 C colder than most other dive sites around Bali. This is due to the nearby deep water cold currents which are directed into the bay by upwelling and the daily tidal changes. It is because of this cold water, along with the shallow sand and sea grass environment that makes this place so special. It has a unique blend of tropical, temperate, Indian and Pacific ocean species, all living in the same bay.

Among the many varieties like seahorses, nudibranchs, gobies and dragonets, it is the abundant and variety of anglerfish and scorpionfish that makes this dive site so exiting. There are at least 4 different species of anglerfish that have been found in Secret Bay including the Spotfin Anglerfish and Sargassum Anglerfish. But it is one species which has been producing great interest, locally known as Tono’s Anglerfish, about 30 cm in length and usually yellow coloration. It has an interesting esca (bait) that is unusual to any other species. This indicates it may be a new sub-species or even a new species all together.

Secret Bay has the most stunning variety and diversity of scorpionfish. One of the most common species found here is the Dwarf Lionfish (Dendrochirus branchypterus), which, due to its surrounding environment, has adapted its coloration to a dazzling rusty red body with vivid green eyes. The Blue-Finned Lionfish is apparently a first for Indonesian waters. With the eclectic blue pattern on its pectoral, it is very easy to see how it got its name.

Puri Jati

This site is reached by car at approximately 40 minutes from mimpi. Like Secret Bay, Puri Jati is a macro site with challenging visibility at average 5 meters. Unlike Secret Bay, this site lies to face open sea water covering a shoreline of approximately 150 meters long. The sea bed is communalized by volcanic black sand with sea grass in many parts. Easy shore dive at average depth from 7 to 12 meters. Divers began to dive this site approximately 5 years ago when some rare species were discovered. Blue wing lionfish, coconut octopus and a variety of nudibranchs are among those making home here. But it is the mimic octopus which makes this site become so popular. During the wet season from February and March, entry could be really challenging as wave could be strong.

Mimpi Channel

Only 5 minutes by boat, in the narrow entrance channel leading into the resort’s bay, is a site with delicate hard corals growing in tower-like structures at average depth from 7 to 10 meters. Colors were bright and vibrant in different shades of green and yellow. One area in particular has dozens of these two and three meter high coral towers, all closely packed together. Among the corals there are various gobies, blennies, lionfish, pajama cardinal, nudibranchs and blue spotted trevally. A little bit to inner left part of the channel is called Mimpi lagoon which appears to be a great home for mandarin fish. A good timing entry before 06:00 pm could be rewarding to see the fame mandarin mating melodrama.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Snorkeling

Some parts of menjangan island offer Bali`s best snorkeling sites. Pos 1 on the west tip and Pos 2 on the east tip are especially good for family and children as both have white sandy beach which offer easy entrance and good lunch gathering break. Coral Garden in the north side of the island is home to some of Bali`s healthiest and most colorful coral reef spreading shallow at average depth from 2 to 4 meters beneath surface.

Kayaking

One or two hours paddle kayaking along the resort secluded bay is an ideal option to do. Early morning or late afternoon is well recommended as it offers better chance to see some wild along the mangrove including macaque and some water birds especially the little blue king fisher. Afternoon trip could possibly end with a stunning sunset drop behind the majestic mountains.

SURROUNDING

Village of Pejarakan

The village of Pejarakan where the resort is administratively located boasts a mixed settlement of Balinese Hindu and Islamic Madurese community. People grow corn during wet season from November to April and cultivate grape during dry season from June to September. Like any other coastal village in Bali, fishing is also practiced for living at certain seasons. The village has a traditional market, busy between 05:00 until approximately 09:00 at mornings

Traditional Salt-Panning

Just 5 minutes from the resort, a small Madurese community of the village has long practiced traditional salt-making for years of generations. Sea water is pumped into hectares of blocked lands, heated under the sun for 10 days and then dried to produce pure traditional salt of Bali. Production season is certainly during dry season from June to September when the sun is heating almost every day.

Pearl-Farming

large scale of pearl-farming has been long practiced in many parts of North Bali coast including those of several villages nearby the resort. Pearl of high quality is intensively produced from this farming to fill market demand in Japan, Europe and America. Several of these farms offer and organize site-tour for visitors to upgrade knowledge and understanding about pearl production. Tour covers all stages of the production from hatchery to harvesting. And it also offers a unique opportunity to purchase pearls directly, resulting in the best value for money and quality.

Grape Cultivation

Grape cultivation is well and largely practiced in yards close to the resort. From this cultivation, black grape is produced and sold to major Indonesian cities of Bali and Java. Although the cultivation is all year round but the best season is during the dry season from June to September. Several Bali-based wine producers have also used this grape as ingredients of their wine.

Turtle Project

A volunteer project located in the village of Pemuteran approximately 10 minutes drive from the resort to save the future of the green sea turtle. It all started in 1994 and the main energy is put on educating the locals to care about the turtle by giving them an alternative, eco-friendly means of earning money. Turtle egg is bought from the locals and then breed it in the hatchery. For a small donation of Rp. 50,000, visitors can release a juvenile turtle between 3 to 6 months old to the ocean. This individual donation or other private donations will proceed to keep the continuation of this project.

Nearby Temples

Several major important temples of Bali are located just few minutes drive from the resort. These temples include the three closely-related temples of Pulaki, Melanting and Pabean as well as temple of Kelenting Sari at hilltop of Menjangan Island. These temples were built as part of the holy trip of the great Hindu missionary, Danghyang Nirartha who came across from the great kingdom of Majapahit in Java in the 16 th century to teach Hinduism to the people of Bali.

Gilimanuk Harbor

A small harbor town serves mainly as a transit point to shuttle people, cargo and cars connecting the islands of Bali and Java. The community retains a multi-cultural mixture of Balinese, Javanese, Bugis and Madurese. It has traditional market, several local restaurants and accommodations.

WEST BALI NATIONAL PARK

In 1974, an area of 200 square kilometers of coastal forest around the Prapat Agung peninsula in the northwestern tip of Bali was designated as a “Nature Park”. One of the reasons for this was to preserve the Bali tiger which became extinct anyway ! The park was extended in 1974 and again in 1985 when further 500 square kilometers of interior forest was included and the whole area was upgraded to become the Bali Barat National Park.

The terrain here is not really forest land, it is actually coastal savanna. During the dry season from June to September, when there is sparse rainfall, the trees shed their leaves and the landscape becomes scorched and yellow. When the monsoon rains fall in December, the entire landscape is magically transformed and becomes lush and green.

Floras and Faunas

The park is home to the critically-endangered bird species White Starling (Leucopsar Rothschildii). The bird is pure white except for its black wing-tips and blue face. A cooperative conservation program is being implemented by the Indonesian and overseas agencies to try to introduce some of these captives birds back to the wild. Being Bali’s closest tip to Java, the park is also inhabited by a variety of indigenous migratory bird species which cross the Bali Strait from Java. The Black Shouldered-Kite, the Yellow Billed-Oxpecken, the Blue Kingfisher, the White-Bellied Sea Eagle are among few of the birds.

The park is also habitat to a number of other faunas such as Ant-Eater (Manis Javanicus), Porcopines (Hystrix Branchyora), Leopard Cat (Felis Bengalencus), Barking Deer (Mantiacus Muntjak), Black Monkey (Presbytis Cristata), Giant Squirrel (Ratufa Bicolar). Typical floras floras found in the park include Lontar Palm (Bonasus Flabellfer), Sawo Kecik (Manilkara Kauki), Keruing Bunga (Dipterocarpus Hasseltii), Sono Keling (Dalbergia Intifolia), Cendana (Santalum Ulbum), Pulai (Alstonia Scholaris), Kepuh (Sterculia Foetida), Kemiri (Alcuritas Moluccana), Trengguli (Cassia Fistula), Bayur (Pterospermum Diversifolium), Buni (Antidesma Bunius), Bungur (Logerstromia Speciosa), Burahol (Stelechocarpus Burahol), Kesambi (Scheichera Oleosa), Mundu (Garcia Dulcis).

The resort is located just on the doorstep away from this preservation boundary serving as an ideal base camp to explore this wildlife.

Mangrove

The appearance of mangrove is no clue to the vital important role they play in the ecosystem. Often thought of as a nuisance or as a useless swamp, the mangrove ecosystem is undeniably vital to the coastal zone. Among the reasons, mangrove act as a nursery area for many fish species, absorb potentially damaging wave and storm energy as well as acting as a reservoir pollutants.

The Bali Barat National Park is home to approximately 19 different species of mangrove. Some of them cover the coastal line of Banyuwedang bay where Mimpi Resort is located. Others occupy coastal zones in Gilimanuk and Terima bay, Prapat Agung Peninsula and Menjangan island. They are generally healthy and serve as distinctive habitat for several rare aquatic species.

To facilitate further understanding about mangrove habitat, a guided tour along the bay of Banyuwedang can be arranged. The tour will approximately take one to two hours departing directly from the resort’s gazebo jetty. Although the tour can be organized at any time of the day, it is recommended to be at either in the morning or in the afternoon. Apart from avoiding sun heat, both times offer better chance to see the wild which live in the mangrove especially macaque and little blue king fisher. Another great option to enjoy a closer look at mangrove is simply by kayaking along the bay.

EXPLORATION

Park Trekking

The terrain and landscape of the Bali Barat National Park largely consists of monsoon forest and savanna. Lush mangrove vegetation also occupy some of its coastal area along the bay of Banyuwedang and Gilimanuk, Prapat Agung peninsula and Menjangan Island.

Characterized by small annual rainfall, much less from the rest of Bali particularly the south, the Park deserves distinct nature both in flora and fauna. To explore its unique terrain and wildlife, trekking inside the Park can truly be a discovery. Depending on physical capacity, we arrange park-trekking ranging from two up to five hours.

Recommendations and Tips :
  1. For the comfort during exploration, it is firmly recommended to wear comfortable clothes which could easily absorb sweat. Long trousers and long sleeved shirt is important to protect the body from possible contact with insects particularly mosquito or thorn scratch.
  2. Ideally the clothes need not be with attractive color as this may scare the animals away. Instead it needs to have pockets to keep any small notebook and the likes.
  3. Due to tropical climate of the Park, it is indeed advisable to use insect repellant to protect the body from possible insect contact particularly mosquito.
  4. Wear special trekking shoes and hat to prevent from sun heat.
  5. Raincoat is important to bring during exploration on wet rainy season from November to April.
  6. Black monkeys or often called Silver Leaf monkeys are grey-furred with long tail. They love to live in a group, high on the tree, swinging from branches. To be able to observe these animals, move fast but remain quiet. Unlike the macaque monkeys, they are very shy.
  7. Binocular and camera (special for photo hunting) are definitely worth bringing.

Bird Watching

The Bali Barat National Park is the preferred habitat of approximately 300 species of tropical birds, both migratory and endemic. Many of them are quite difficult to spot. From seed, insect to fish-eating species, all can be found here either along its monsoon habitat or coastal mangrove swamp.

For a more advanced birding, we arrange guided exploration into several birding sites of the Park. To reserve best observation moment, arrangement could be made either early in the morning from 07:00 to 09:00 am or late in the afternoon from 04:00 to 06:00 pm, both for approximately two hours. Depending on current season and other weather-related facts, birding-site options include coastal mangrove area of Teluk Terima including its small river, Tegal.

Bunder near the Starling rehabilitation center and coastal area of Cekik close to the Park headquarter.

  2. 2. Price includes transfer and pick-up to/from departing and ending point, park entrance fee and bottled mineral water.
  3. Observation is guided by an English-speaking Park Ranger.
  4. In case you do not bring one, binocular will be provided.
  5. To facilitate arrangement, please book one day in advance with the Front Desk.
  6. Recommended season is from June to October (dry season).

Recommendations and Tips :
  1. Walk slowly and quietly and keep sufficient distance from each other. Alternatively you may sit patiently in a good spot or tower whilst observing the birds.
  2. Do not wear shirt/clothes with attractive color as this may scare the birds away.
  3. Several bird species such as Jungle Fowl, Sempidan, Paok and Anis develop great ability to hear even the very small noise and will quickly disappear before we are able to catch any sight of their movement. Fast walk but remain quiet is important to be able to observe these species.
  4. Tropical humidity may cause problem to binocular, camera lens and glasses. It is firmly recommended to use waterproof carrier bag to keep these equipments. If your glasses get wet of rain during observation, try to clean it until dry with plash chamois.
  5. If the inside part of your binocular get wet, dry it immediately by facing it to the sun or keep it the whole night inside a dry box. Another extreme way is by warming it near the fire, but this will risk in shortening the lifespan of your binocular.

Safari Ride
An afternoon exploration into the heart of the Bali Barat National Park, along the western coast of Prapat Agung peninsula. Largely occupied by monsoon and savanna, Prapat Agung is home to many varieties of Bali Barat species, making this peninsula become the main zone of the Park conservation. It samples several species of vertebrates such as kera hitam (black monkey / Presbytis cristata), kera abu (macaque monkey), menjangan (barking deer / Cervus timorensis), kancil (Trangulus javanicus), babi hutan (wild pig) and kucing hutan (wild cat).

Reptile biawak (giant lizard / Varanus salvador) and Aves ayam-hutan hijau (green junglefowl / Gallus varius), eagle and owl also occupy this area. Several endangered floras include sawo kecik (Manilkara kauki), panggal buaya and cendana (Santalum album).

To reserve the best moment and opportunity to observe the wilds in their natural habitat, this safari tour is exclusively organized to be only during the dry season from the months of June to October with a set-up time from 03:00 pm until approximately 06:00 pm. Starling Visit

The Bali Barat National Park is home to Bali’s only endemic bird, the Rothschild’s Mynah which is more commonly known as the Bali Starling. The bird is pure white except for its black wing-tips and blue face. In the evenings, the mynahs normally fly down from the hills where they feed during the day to roost near the sea. The local Pilang tree (Acacia leucophloea) which occupies many parts of the park monsoon forest has been their choice of nest for ages. As it gets older, the tree normally looses off its skin making it slippery for any predator such as snake to climb and hunt the starling eggs.

Although Bali is its natural and only habitat, the numbers of Bali Starling have never been large. Today it is believed that less than 30 Bali Starling’s have remained uncaptured in the wild! A cooperative conservation program is being implemented by the Indonesian and overseas agencies to try to introduce some of these captive birds back to the wild.

There are currently two rehabilitation centers in the Park. One is located in Tegal Bunder just on the gate to Perapat Agung peninsula and another in Teluk Berumbun opposite menjangan island’s Pos I. The first can be reached by a 20-minute car drive but the second can only be reached by an approximately 45-minute boat ride from the resort.
